Through temporarily occupied sites, Post Disaster Rooftops transforms the rooftops of Taranto's città vecchia (old city) into performative stages.
The project interprets rooftops as unconventional urban spaces - suspended between public and private - free from the dominant hegemonic forms of control. Each episode, called an EP (extended play), investigates a pressing contemporary issue, starting with the city's state of crisis - which is not exclusively environmental. PDR EP04 stages a series of interdisciplinary ac- tions over three days, April 21-23, 2023. Within this programming, Silvia Calderoni and Ilenia Caleo present The Future is NOW? #3, a time-dilated performance that works with the liquid substances of the area, with water and the sea, and all the polluting and toxic traces they hold.
The installation in the pavilion is an assemblage of mixed media elements that evoke the events that occurred on the rooftops. Layered over a series of spatial elements - the physical products of the local performative actions, such as the tarp and the seats designed for the assembly - are traces of the sounds of the con- versations between participants and inhabitants, the sounds of the urban infrastructure and the movements of the bodies that inhabit it. The goal is to convey a process in which the context and the work mutually influence and inform one another.
Post Disaster
Founded by Gabriele Leo, Gabriella Mastrangelo, Grazia Mappa and Peppe Frisino, Post Disaster is an interdisciplinary collective whose practice intersects spatial, performative and editorial actions. Their research uses the metaphor of disaster meant as a spatial lens for understanding global dynamics and tensions.
